Vigilant Books & Coffee sells quality used books - and some new books set in the Ohio Valley or by local authors. We have a vast selection of books ranging from classic literature to the latest bestsellers. We also offer a range of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, biography, and children's books. Our collection about NASA, space and astronomy is especially outstanding. We also have a collection of books about writing since we want to encourage budding authors. Our team of knowledgeable and friendly staff are always on hand to help you find the perfect book. With their expertise, they can recommend books based on your interests and preferences.

Our story
Vigilant occupies the second-oldest fire station in West Virginia — a building that's been a part of Wheeling for more than a century, first as a place of readiness and neighborly vigilance, later as a local watering hole, and now something new.
The idea for what it's become started somewhere simpler: a lifelong love of reading, and a belief that Wheeling deserved a place built around it.
The mission has changed since the building's firehouse days, but the instinct hasn't. We are proud to be a space for the community to gather.
your 'Third Place'
Vigilant isn't a coffee shop that happens to sell books, or a bookstore that happens to serve coffee. It's the place you come without a reason — to browse, to work, to sit for an afternoon and not be rushed.
Free wifi. Comfortable seating. Staff who say hello when you walk in, whether or not you've bought anything yet. Children are guests here, not an inconvenience. We want Wheeling to treat this space like a habit, not an occasion.
