Our story
Vigilant Books occupies the second-oldest fire station in West Virginia — a building that's been an integral part of Wheeling for over a century. Initially serving as a hub of readiness and neighborly vigilance, it later transformed into a local watering hole and has now evolved into a beloved coffee shop and bookstore where the community gathers to relax and enjoy their time together.
The concept behind Vigilant Books originated from a simple passion: a lifelong love of reading and the belief that Wheeling deserved a dedicated space built around this idea.
While the mission has shifted since the building's days as a firehouse, the instinct to serve the Wheeling community bookstore has remained strong. We take great pride in being a welcoming space for everyone to come together.
your 'Third Place'
Vigilant isn't just a coffee shop that happens to sell books, or a bookstore that serves coffee. Instead, it's the perfect spot to visit without a specific reason — to browse the shelves, get some work done, or enjoy an afternoon without feeling rushed.
With free wifi, comfortable seating, and friendly staff who greet you as you enter, whether or not you've made a purchase, it's a welcoming environment. Here, children are considered guests, not inconveniences. We want the Wheeling community bookstore to feel like a home away from home for everyone.
